oops i didn't write for a year again
oops haven’t written anything on here for a year. big mistake but i’m diving back in because i feel guilty. here’s what i’ve been listening to; some new, some old, and also some cool stuff my friends have been doing.
Unsoothing Interior - Vero
Vero is a Swedish band that sounds perfect in so many ways to me. If you told me “Cupid” was a long-lost Sonic Youth track with a new vocalist thrown in the mix, I might believe you. Unsoothing Interior is Vero’s debut album, out on PNKSLM Recordings (May 2022).
“All Over Again” - bedlocked
Latest single from Houston Texas’ bedlocked.
“my little tony” - bar italia
bar italia’s Tracey Denim was one of the most-hyped (also best) albums from 2023 so far, a few of my other favorites are following. Their week-long Los Angeles run of small shows sold out at every venue, every night. Meme for context of my thoughts on that. “my little tony” is a follow up single from Tracy Denim, and it does not disappoint.
The Fashion Focus - Starflyer 59
Been listening to a lot of this 1998 album, but mostly “The Birthrite”. Have a listen to this album if you haven’t yet!
“Indiana” - The Heaven
A friend of the newsletter, Preston Bell, is in a new project called The Heaven, and their first and only single “Indiana” quite simply rocks. Looking forward to their new music, and hoping to catch them at another house show soon.
Adjacent musicians running in the same scene are untitled (halo) and touching ice. Check them out too.
Pod - The Breeders
Following their 30th anniversary promotion of “Last Splash”, The Breeders announced their opening run of New York and Los Angeles shows, opening for pop princess Olivia Rodrigo. I’ve been listening to a ton of The Breeders this year, but wouldn’t cough up the cash to see them at the Wiltern.
Fortunately for me, two of my favorite modern artists have been gaining popularity and releasing more and more music, and touring frequently as well:
“Heavy Truck Driver” - Toner (new single from Oakland slacker-rock group), and Yard - Slow Pulp (brand new album from my 2020 AOTY winning band). I’ve seen Toner at least 4 times in the last year, and I’m a proud ticket holder to Slow Pulp’s October tour.
Other music I’m bumping lately, just because it’s autumn and it feels right:
Silent Alarm - Bloc Party
Rumours - Fleetwood Mac (also this You’re Wrong About episode about the recording process)
Either/Or - Elliott Smith
Anything by Truth Club
Wave Your Moonlight Hat For The Snowfall Train - You’ll Never Get To Heaven
What albums remind you of autumn? Were they released in autumn or do you just associate the album with the season?
